Slovakia Confirms No Funding for Ukraine

(MENAFN) Slovakia’s top leadership has formally rejected any military or financial participation in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, unveiling a new policy framework on Saturday.

The announcement was made at a press conference by President Peter Pellegrini, Parliamentary Chair Richard Rasi, and Prime Minister Robert Fico, who represent the three parties currently governing the country.

President Pellegrini confirmed that Bratislava will uphold its commitment not to send military assistance to Kiev in its fight against Russia. He added that Slovakia will neither deploy troops to Ukraine nor join the European Commission’s proposed loan program intended to cover Ukraine’s budget shortfall.

Prime Minister Fico, known for his Euroskeptic stance, warned against Slovakia becoming “a wounded deer” amid the European Union’s crisis, stressing that energy security remains a critical national concern. He called for unity within the ruling coalition to navigate geopolitical instability.

In December, EU leaders approved a plan to borrow €90 billion ($105 billion) against the bloc’s common budget to aid Kiev. However, Slovakia, alongside the Czech Republic and Hungary, opted out of the initiative. All three countries are led by politicians skeptical of Brussels’ handling of the Ukraine war.

The loan scheme emerged after EU members failed to reach consensus on using frozen Russian sovereign assets to finance Ukraine, a proposal critics argued was legally questionable and fraught with risks.
